Welcome to the very first INQ Podcast!
The goal with this show is to create a “comic-con in your ears”, and have guests on to do a deep dive into some aspect of the comics world. Just like a really good panel discussion at a comic-con, I hope the show will be educational, entertaining, and will encourage you to explore further on your own.
This time, our focus is autobiographical comics, and I’m joined by MariNaomi, who’s been doing autobiographical work for years (including Turning Japanese, which we spotlit in a previous column). In the podcast, we talk about the ins and outs of autobio comics: how to do it right, how to do it wrong, how to do it without pissing people off (or at least how to learn not to care quite so much if you do.)
Mari’s recommendations from the end of the show:
“Tiny Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed
“One! Hundred! Demons!” by Lynda Barry
“Calling Dr. Laura” by Nicole Georges
“The Hospital Suite” by Don Porcellino
“Drinking at the Movies” by Julia Wertz
“Atlas of the Human Heart” by Ariel Gore
“Diary of a Teenage Girl” by Phoebe Gloeckner
Carol Tyler’s “You’ll Never Know” trilogy
